Lip stains have had the best year so far, considering how much Korean beauty has taken a permanent hold on the makeup industry in the past couple of years. Korean beauty products are all the rage right now and people cannot seem to get enough of the soft, dewy, and youthful beauty looks. The products being imported from South Korea have impressed and wowed all beauty lovers as well as the industry experts. Lip stain is one of the hottest trends in Korea and it has transferred over across the borders not just in Asian countries but Western regions as well.

Lip stains or tints are what the name suggests, a stain of color to make your lips look naturally beautiful. Makeup trends have recently got everyone obsessed with having over-drawn, contoured lips with sharp edges, and a smooth pigmented application. But not many people like that particular look. For those individuals, cosmetic brands have introduced lip tints that only give you a pop of color and a natural look. Korean beauty and Asian beauty brands have been profiting from lip stains for years but it wasn’t until recently that Western brands have also taken to the trend. Most people do not know how to apply lip tints though and we are here to help you out.

What Are Lip Stains Exactly

Lip stains are the complete opposite of lipsticks and glosses. Lip stains are meant to only provide a blushing effect to your lips. While lipsticks are made from oils or waxes, lip tints are made using gel or liquid bases. Once the liquid of the stain evaporates, it leaves behind a colorful stain that makes your lips look naturally appealing. The diffused look gives off a blurred effect and makes you look healthy and pretty.

They are highly pigmented and created with moisturizing ingredients that would keep your lips soft. Tints are usually matte and last a lot longer than lipstick. They do not budge or bleed outside the edges of your lips which means you do not need to retouch or reapply like with lipsticks or lip glosses. This makes lip stains a perfect companion for nights out with friends involving talking, eating and drinking. There are many kinds of lip tints including liquid lip tints, matte, lip tint sticks, and peel-off ones. With so many options available, it gets easier to pick your preferred one.

How to Achieve the Perfect Lip Stain

It may sound like they are very easy to apply and do not require much beauty skills, and while that is true to some extent, you have to know the proper technique to apply a lip stain because it is very pigmented and you can end up applying too much or diffusing way too far from the edges of your lips. There is a subtle trick to applying lip stains and achieving the perfect blurred and tinted effect of lip stains. But before you apply it on your lips, the most essential step is to prep your lips first.

Since lip tints are dry and made to look opaque, they can highlight any chapped or flakiness on your lips which would not be a very good look. That is why it is vital that your lips are hydrated, smooth, and soft before you put on a lip stain. Start by softly scrubbing or exfoliating your lips with a lip scrub to take off any flakes or dead skin cells. This would also bring your natural lip shade out which would make the lip tint look even better. After that, you can decide which kind of application suits you or you prefer.

Ombré/Gradient:

Lip tints can be applied in a gradient ombré, diffused or a full coverage manner. If you want a gradient effect which is the most natural-looking style, then you only need to put a bit of lip stain on the center of your lips. Since lip stains are so pigmented, a little goes a long way so start small and then layer it as much as you want. In a gradient look, however, you only need to apply a little. Then press your lips together a couple of times to blend and diffuse the color on your lips. It would start blending into the outer edges of your lips and make them look naturally colorful. This trick also makes your lips look plumper and fuller. If the color has become too pigmented by the edges then just take a bit off concealer or your foundation to dab on the edges and make it look naturally blended and diffused. For this technique, you could choose colors close to your natural color and complexion.

Diffused:

A diffused lip has more color and is a bit more pigmented than the gradient look. For this particular method, you would need to put on a bit more color on your lips. Apply it to most of your lip, being careful to avoid putting it on the edges. If you apply it right on the edges, it would not look diffused but just like a regular lipstick. The point is to make your edges look blurred and not too defined. Make sure to blend the color properly so it looks natural and not fake. Once you have blended it all in, check to see if it has bled out too much from the edges and fix it with a bit of concealer.

Full Coverage:

A full coverage look is like any lipstick except it is more natural looking with diffused edges, matte, and sticks for a longer time. It is less of a natural look but the blurred edges do not make it look too sharp or defined. Lip stains can be used as lipsticks too since they last long and do not require any upkeep throughout the day. After using the lip stain on the full surface of your lips, blot it with a tissue paper after it dries and then apply a second coat to give it a more pigmented yet diffused look. You can dab a bit of lip balm or gloss over top to give it a slight shine and make your lips look fuller.
